Metering, settlement and prudentials

Calculate settlement exposure and explain prudential support.

Reconcile energy settlement

Settlement starts with interval energy and the relevant price, then applies applicable loss treatment, charges and adjustments. Dispatch targets are not a substitute for settlement metering. Credit support manages exposure between delivery, settlement and payment.

01Trace the quantity before calculating the money

A settlement analysis starts with the market, participant role, connection point, time basis and quantity definition. A meter's interval energy is different from an instantaneous power reading, an end-of-interval target and a cumulative register. Use the correct unit and determine whether import/export is positive or negative in each source.

For an introductory energy-only calculation, multiply matching MWh by the applicable interval A$/MWh. An average 60 MW load over five minutes consumes 5 MWh; at A$120/MWh its energy-only cost is A$600. The full statement can include other components and adjustments, so this subtotal is not automatically the final invoice.

Key terms in plain English
MW
Megawatt: a measure of power, or how quickly energy is transferred. A plant's maximum MW is not its actual output in every interval.
MWh
Megawatt-hour: a quantity of energy. A steady 1 MW for one hour delivers 1 MWh.
Dispatch
The operational process of determining output and consumption targets, subject to offers, demand and system constraints. A target is not a meter reading.

Keep energy settlement and contracts separate

Reconcile each component instead of treating a spot price as a final customer bill.
