Operational demand and load forecasting

Create and validate a short-term demand forecast.

Forecast demand without leakage

Define the demand measure before modelling it. Operational demand differs from underlying consumption when behind-the-meter generation changes. Validate in time order and use only predictors that would have been available when the forecast was issued.

01Define a forecast that can actually be tested

Specify target, issue time, horizon, geography and use. Forecasting a site's demand at 09:20 from information available at 08:55 differs from predicting a regional evening peak one day ahead. The linked lab forecasts the same six site-demand intervals used in Topic 31. It does not estimate AEMO operational demand or represent a fitted production model.

Start with a baseline you could run at decision time, such as an appropriately selected previous-day or previous-week profile. A candidate model must beat that baseline on a relevant task, not merely fit the historical observations more closely. Preserve forecast issue times and the inputs that were available when each prediction was made.

For a real operational-demand project, define the published demand measure and its boundary before building features. Rooftop generation, embedded load, weather and calendar effects can alter the interpretation. A meter-level model, regional demand forecast and connection capacity assessment are different products even if each uses MW.

Key terms in plain English
MW
Megawatt: a measure of power, or how quickly energy is transferred. A plant's maximum MW is not its actual output in every interval.

A smaller error is evidence, not approval

Score identical observations with the same sign convention.

  1. 01 · Baseline16.67 MW MAE

100 MW absolute error total across six observations

  2. 02 · Candidate6.67 MW MAE

40 MW absolute error total across the same six observations

Test peaks, stability and information availability

Invented forecast comparison. Six observations cannot establish production accuracy or expected financial performance.
