INDUSTRY INTRODUCTION

Australia’s energy landscape

The systems, institutions and businesses behind Australian energy.

Six chapters · Read in order or jump to a section below.

White sculpted solar landscape with orderly panel rows, eucalyptus trees and gently rolling hills.
01 · SET THE BOUNDARY

One country. Several energy systems.

“Australian energy” includes electricity, gas, coal, liquid fuels and emerging energy products. A national total is useful context, but a local project needs a much more specific boundary.

EAST & SOUTH-EAST

National Electricity Market

Queensland, NSW/ACT, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania. Interconnected regions, but prices and physical constraints differ.

Study NEM and jurisdictional architecture
SOUTH-WEST WA

Wholesale Electricity Market

The WEM serves the South West Interconnected System. It is not connected to the NEM and does not cover every electricity system in WA.

Read the WA framework
BEYOND THE MAJOR GRIDS

Regional & off-grid systems

Remote communities, mines, islands and parts of the Northern Territory operate with different physical systems and arrangements. Start with the actual network and operator.

Explore national and off-grid statistics
Follow three relationships, not just the electricity. An original teaching diagram; arrows describe relationships, not a network model.

02 · UNDERSTAND THE SCALE

Energy produced is not energy consumed.

National snapshot · FY2024–25 · DCCEEW, Australian Energy Update 2026, Tables 2, 12, 13 and 16

Primary energy produced

≈18,900 PJ

Report Table 12: 18,871.4 PJ before conversion.

Primary energy consumed

5,872 PJ

Report Table 2: primary energy, not final consumption.

Electricity generated

282.5 TWh

Report Table 13: 282,478 GWh, including onsite and off-grid.

Renewable electricity

37.6 %

Report Table 13: all Australian generation, not just the NEM.

National snapshot checked against the September 2026 report on 18 October 2026. All four figures refer to FY2024–25; the report also contains separate calendar-year and on-grid series.

Australia exported about 15,067 PJ of energy in FY2024–25. This is the gross export total from report Table 16, not exports minus imports. Coal and LNG dominate exports. Electricity is only part of the energy economy; primary-energy totals also include fuels used in transport, industry and conversion. Do not add electricity output to the fuel used to generate it.

Capacity is a stock. Production is a flow.

MW or GW
Power capability at a point in time. Record whether it is nameplate, available, registered or committed.
MWh, GWh or TWh
Energy over a stated interval. 1 TWh = 1 million MWh.
PJ
Energy across fuels. 1 TWh = 3.6 PJ. Conversion of units does not remove differences in scope.
Open the NEM capacity register

July 2026 workbook checked. Filter existing assets separately from proposed and committed projects. This register is not a total for all Australian grids and rooftop systems.

A plant rating is not an annual forecast.

Energy = capacity × hours × capacity factor

Teaching example: a 100 MW plant at an assumed 35% capacity factor produces 100 × 8,760 × 0.35 = 306,600 MWh in a 365-day year.

That calculation does not establish available output at the evening peak. Weather, outages, fuel, network constraints and storage state still matter.

Build confidence with energy and power
03 · WHO DOES WHAT

Find the decision-maker, not just the acronym.

Use this starting directory to identify the function. Then check the applicable law, jurisdiction and current instrument. It is not a complete approvals checklist.

04 · FOLLOW THE BUSINESS MODEL

Assets explain what a company does. Cash flows explain the business.

A representative directory, not a market-share ranking or an exhaustive register. Expand a company for its assets and business model, or visit its official website in a new tab.

AGLGeneration & retail

Assets / activities: Generation fleet and customer energy business.

Build a defensible asset register

For each asset record: owner and equity share; operator; location and market; technology; operating status; MW; storage MWh; annual output; source date; and whether a value is gross, sent-out or equity-attributable. Add the regulatory asset base only where relevant. A coal reserve, a battery rating and a network valuation are not comparable measures of capacity.

Never fill an undisclosed profit cell with an estimate presented as fact. An asset's earnings may not be separately disclosed in the group's accounts.

Start with AEMO's NEM project register
05 · PRICE, PLACE & INTERNATIONAL EXPOSURE

There is no single “Australian energy price”.

Q2 2026 · A$/MWh · regional averages reported in AEMO's QED summary, published 28 July 2026.

NEM regional wholesale electricity prices
Victoria56
Queensland67
New South Wales75
South Australia86
Tasmania86

Reported NEM average: A$74/MWh. The separate WEM real-time average was A$118/MWh. Different systems and price measures: do not combine them into a national tariff.

What does A$74/MWh mean for a bill?

A$74/MWh = 7.4 cents/kWh

This is a unit conversion, not a retail offer. A bill can include network charges, the load shape, hedging, retail service, environmental obligations and tax.

AEMO's Q2 summary also reported east-coast wholesale gas at A$9.08/GJ. A gas supply offer at your site may have different timing, flexibility and transport terms.

Compare AER's charts and price definitions

A volume-weighted average can differ from a time-weighted average. Do not call the difference an error without checking the method.

How global markets reach an Australian customer

LNG & GAS

An export alternative

An LNG netback estimates an export-equivalent gas value after relevant liquefaction and shipping costs. Domestic contracts also depend on location, transport, duration and conditions.

ACCC netback series · updated 16 Oct 2026
LIQUID FUELS

Trade & logistics

Crude and refined-product supply chains connect Australian transport to international shipping and prices. A refinery margin is a spread, not the absolute price of crude.

FINANCE & CONTRACTS

Currency & timing

For an imported US$100m item, a teaching exchange rate of US$0.65 per A$ gives A$153.8m; at US$0.60 it is A$166.7m, before hedges and other costs.

Illustrative sensitivity, not current FX data or a forecast.

06 · READ THE OUTLOOK CRITICALLY

Use forecasts to test decisions, not to promise the future.

DEMAND

Data centres & electrification

The 2026 ESOO Step Change scenario projects NEM data-centre consumption rising from about 5 TWh in 2025–26 to 34 TWh in 2035–36. The later figure is a forecast, not connected capacity today.

Read the demand and reliability outlook
DELIVERY

Build rates & system capability

The 2026 ISP's least-cost pathway combines renewables, networks, storage and gas support through 2050. For a project, test delivery delays, constraints and the difference between energy and firm capacity.

Read the plan and assumptions
GAS

Annual volume & winter peaks

The 2026 GSOO identifies an improved near-term outlook but a need for investment from 2030. Peak-day risk, transport and storage must be assessed separately from annual demand.

Annual statistics

How much energy did Australia produce and use?

DCCEEW · Australian Energy Update 2026

Start with the national balance, then separate fuels, industries and electricity tables.

Publication year is not the observation year.

Quarterly market evidence

What happened to markets last quarter?

AEMO · Quarterly Energy Dynamics — Q2 2026 summary

Compare the same quarter, region and price definition. Use source charts for drivers.

A quarterly average is neither a forward quote nor a customer bill.

Forecast reports

Where might electricity supply be insufficient?

AEMO · ESOO reports and supporting data

Identify scenario, regional demand, availability assumptions and project inclusion criteria.

A modelled reliability gap is not a forecast that a blackout will occur.

Forecast reports

Will gas be available when and where needed?

AEMO · GSOO reports and supporting data

Separate annual volumes from peak-day deliverability, pipelines and storage.

A national annual surplus cannot prove a southern winter peak is covered.

System plan

What development path could meet future needs?

AEMO · 2026 Integrated System Plan and data

Read scenario assumptions, network timing, system security and alternatives together.

A least-cost system path is not an individual project's guaranteed return.

Market structure report

Who participates and how is the market performing?

AER · State of the energy market 2025

Use the structural overview, then the more recent quarterly charts for prices.

The 2025 edition must not be relabelled as a 2026 dataset.

Source register, dates & update method

These sources join the Academy's resource catalogue for scheduled review. Weekly checking is an editorial workflow, not a real-time data service. A changed page triggers investigation; figures and answers require review before publication. Important changes can be flagged separately. This page does not fetch live figures when you open it.

Annual publications lag the period measured. A dated article remains historical evidence even when a newer report appears. Links can move or be restricted by the publisher. No organisation listed here has endorsed or accredited this module.
